Adults Infectious Disease - Update

Presented by: Ryan Smith, DO

This session will discuss common infectious diseases in multiple organ systems. Discussion will focus on case presentations, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatments, and prevention measures. The participant will have a thorough understanding of and recognition for infectious agents Hepatitis C, Gonorrhea/Chlamydia, UTI, MRSA/VRE, and Bacterial endocarditis with a brief overview of Hep A, Zika, Lyme, HIV, and COVID.

After attending this session attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize updated guideline screening recommendations for Hepatitis C in adults.
  2. Understand the recommended measures for detection and treatment of urethritis/cervicitis.
  3. Develop recognition of the less common (but still important) infections (Hep A, Zika, Lyme, HIV, COVID)

    Alcohol Use Disorder

    Presented by: Kelly Arenz, DO, FASAM

    Overview of alcohol use disorder including screening, treatment, and relapse prevention in a case based format.

    After attending this session attendees will be able to:

    1. Define alcohol use disorder.
    2. Identify treatment option for alcohol use disorder.
    3. Prescribe medication for relapse prevention.

      Breast Disease for the Primary Care Physician

      Presented by: Jessica Hafner, DO

      This session will feature an overview of common benign breast disease, also with an emphasis on when to consult specialists.

      After attending this session attendees will be able to:

      1. Identify and counsel about benign diseases of the breast.
      2. Identify worrisome signs of possible malignancy and when to call specialists.
      3. State to date information on high risk patients, screening, and consulting.

      Cannabis From an Addiction Perspective

      Presented by: Carl Christensen, MD, PhDA

      With the current legalization of recreational and medical marijuana, the use of marijuana in vulnerable populations had dramatically increased. These vulnerable populations, with an increased risk of addictive disorder, include those with genetic predisposition, trauma, and increased exposure to cannabis. The concept that cannabis dos not affect the "reward system" is under question. There are multiple consequences of regular cannabis use recognized by addiction specialist. The risk of addiction to cannabis is significant, and treatment options are limited. It is critical that the medical practitioner in Michigan be able to counsel patients on the risks and benefits of cannabis use.

      After attending this session attendees will be able to:

      1. Identify the risk factors for increase likelihood of addiction to cannabis. These include genetics, trauma, and increased availability and exposure to cannabis.
      2. Identify the consequences of cannabis use, including dependency, cognitive dysfunction, mental illness, and risk of accidents.
      3. Understand the available treatments for cannabis dependency, including recent evidence for pharmacotherapy.

        Cultural Considerations of Vaccine Hesitancy

        Presented by: Victoria Torgler, DO

        In this session, we will be discussing the history of vaccine development and recommendations, as well as vaccine safety through the lens of the various cultures found in Michigan. Understanding the cultural background of your patients and how they relate to trust in the healthcare, specifically lack of trust in vaccines.

        After attending this session attendees will be able to:

        1. To understand the history of vaccine development and recommendations to be able to educate your patients.
        2. To understand the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).
        3. To start to develop an understanding of how various cultures and religions think about vaccines and the American Health Care System.

          Elder Mistreatment (Abuse)

          This session will be an overview of identifying elder mistreatment, some short case examples, and what our role is as Family Physicians in reporting/how to report in Michigan.

          1. Identify signs of Elder Abuse in our patients.
          2. Discuss what our roles are as Family Physicians.
          3. Articulate how to report cases of suspected abuse in MI.

          ENT - Common Causes for Common Problems, Uncommonly Diagnosed

          Geriatric Dermatology

          The session is a primer and update on Cutaneous Diseases in Geriatric Patients and therapeutic challenges in the geriatric population.

          1. Discuss new options in therapy for geriatric atopic dermatitis.
          2. Identify non-surgical diagnostic tools in the management of melanoma and dysplastic nevi.
          3. Understand new varied pathological pathways related lower extremity edema.

            Health Professionals in Recovery

            Presented by: Carl Christensen, MD, PhDA

            In this session, Dr. Carl Christensen will discuss how healthcare professionals (HCP) are at the same or increased risk for addictive d/o as the public. It is critical that another healthcare professional be able to identify addictive behavior in their colleagues and be aware of how to refer for treatment/follow up.

            After attending this session attendees will be able to:

            1. Be aware of the risk factors for addictive disorders in general and in healthcare professionals.
            2. Be able to identify "red flags" for addiction in healthcare professional colleagues.
            3. Be aware of the resources available for intervention, evaluation, and monitoring, including the HPRP.


            How to Effectively use Telemedicine in Practice: eCare and Its Impact on Today's Health

            Telehealth is rapidly growing and changing. Particularly given the constraints created by the pandemic, understanding telehealth opportunities, considering implementation and reviewing service benefits to you and your patients is vital and important to consider as a potential option to provide services to our patients.

            2. Discuss engagement implementation strategies for their practice.

              Menopause 202: Beyond the Hot Flash

              Presented by: Barbara DePree, MD, NCMP, MMM

              Menopause occurs in 100% of women, with varying impact to their quality of life. For some, there are no bothersome symptoms, for others there are a myriad of difficulties associated with menopause. We'll review some lesser known symptoms of menopause, beyond hot flashes, and treatment options to better manage their overall health and wellness.

              Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

              Presented by: Kim Pfotenhauer, DO

              This session will review the pathogenesis and spectrum of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It will discuss who to screen, how to diagnose and how to treat and prevent NAFLD.

              After attending this session attendees will be able to:

              1. Discuss the epidemiology and pathogenesis of the spectrum nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
              2. Describe a strategy to screen patients at high risk.
              3. Define parameters for diagnosis of NAFLD.

                Oral Contraceptives

                Presented by: Steve Lown, DO

                This session will discuss a thoughtful approach to prescribing oral contraceptives by tailoring it to the patient.

                After attending this session attendees will be able to:

                1. Describe the effects of estrogen and progestins in contraception.
                2. Describe androgenic effects of progestins.
                3. Discuss tailoring oral contraceptives to the patient.

                  Osteopathic Tenets in Clinic Practice

                  Presented by: Saroj Misra, DO, FACOFP

                  This 45-minute presentation will focus on the history of osteopathy as it applies to Women's Health and discuss how the osteopathic tenets can be both applied in both aspirational and practical ways to modern women's health. By the end of this presentation, the learner should come away with a clearer understanding of why and how osteopathic tenets matter when trying to provide the best individualized care to each woman we encounter.

                  After attending this session attendees will be able to:

                  1. Discuss the historical importance of osteopathic physicians who have impacted our modern approaches to healthcare.
                  2. Recall the four osteopathic tenets and their central role in an osteopathic approach to patient care.
                  3. Identify how these tenets translate into tangible and visible behaviors which demonstrate our osteopathic identity.

                    Pediatric Dermatology

                    Presented by: Katherine Foster, DO

                    This session will focus on common conditions seen in the pediatric population and treatments (and treatment pearls) in the primary care setting. Conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, molluscum, and warts will be discussed. We will also review birthmarks and when to refer to a specialist.

                    After attending this session attendees will be able to:

                    1. Recognize the difference between psoriasis and eczema and how to treat each.
                    2. Identify treatment pearls for in office and OTC management of warts and molluscum.
                    3. Identify when a "birthmark" needs further work up and/or treatment.

                      Updates in Management of Migraine Disorders

                      Presented by: Amanda Nies, DO

                      In this session, we will revisit the diagnosis and treatment of migraine with plans to explore the new abortive and preventative options available.

                      After attending this session attendees will be able to:

                      1. Describe the pathophysiology of migraine.
                      2. List traditional oral therapies.
                      3. Analyze the new CGRP class.
                      4. Discuss the role of injectable options and non-pharmaceutical interventions.

                      Wellness and Resilience

                      Presented by: J'Aimee Lippert, DO

                      Physician wellness and resilience is directly related to the health of patients and communities. In an effort to shift the focus from high levels of burnout, career dissatisfaction, and negative perception, this interactive session will explore the topic of physician wellness in the context of the Osteopathic tenets, and provide space for creatively sharing wellness not only with our patients, but with one another and ourselves.

                      After attending this session attendees will be able to:

                      1. Discuss wellness in the context of Osteopathic tenets.
                      2. Identify the signs, symptoms, and consequences of burnout.
                      3. Explore elements of wellness and set three monthly goals for creatively engaging in wellness activities.
                      4. Discuss resilience as a trainable skill set.
                      5. Develop a strategy for recognizing negative thoughts and reactions and reframing using realistic optimism.
